THE P.L.A.C.E.S. PROJECT

THE P.L.A.C.E.S. PROJECT
IS A PROJECT BY THE MADROOM

It stands for:
People living and learning, through art, culture, education, and sports

P.L.A.C.E.S. is a goal-oriented project, for motivated people.
The purpose is, to create the opportunity for a wide ranging educational and creative experience; and to enrich the lives of people, young and old, who may never have the chance to... go PLACES.

Artists on tour; creating art, interacting with domestic artists, craftsmen and children. A combination of a mobile temporary art colony, and the Peace Corps. To teach, learn, have, and share a creative experience.

The idea began after watching a television program that showed the daily activities in an African village. The people were creating wood sculptures and printing textile, from natural fibers and dyes. The original concept was very simple, the purchase of a "Round the World" airline ticket, good for one year. Select the limit of five destinations that possess exotic native wood, then sculpt my way, interacting with local people, from one location to the next, remaining long enough to complete a piece, or a series of pieces, to be shipped to a selected gallery in the Detroit, area.

The second phase of the plan was to pick-up a friend in Australia, a video editor for Sidney television station, and have her document the creative and cultural interactions on video, to be edited for use as teaching tool in school.

And finally, the present form is to include a group of artists from different countries.

The format in brief is as follows:

TOURS
One year around the world- ten-week stays in five locations, interacting with local artists and children. Creating a new center under the name of the project, or working with an established cultural center.
or:
Three month geographical-covering a specific region; for example, western Canada, western USA, and Mexico.

SATELLITE GALLERIES PROGRAM
Anywhere with a vacant display space to show a portion of the artwork created on the tours, on a rotating basis.

THE CHARITY AUCTION AND SALE
The end of year fundraiser for the project and auxiliary programs.

THE SCHOOL EXHIBITS PROGRAM
Videos, displays, artwork and demonstrations by the artists from the tours.

The PLACES Project, an art-school and educational tool, is here to replenish the spirit of people, the innate talent and clarity in the work that flows through them; to be a conduit between their own culture and others encountered along part of life's journey.
